The Food Platform is an exchange created in resemblance to a stock exchange, however, it is not stock that is being traded, but agricultural commodities. The exchange will be launched in March 2020. At first, as a form of pilot, the exchange will only allow trading in wheat.
We have noticed the need to create a space where you can safely trade in large uniform batches of agricultural goods of high and standardised quality, to match our modern times.
Farming in Poland is largely distributed, with numerous producers offering small batches of goods. This makes it impossible for them to supply large batches of goods with uniform quality.
Offering such small amounts translates into lower prices, which, to make matters worse, are extremely variable.
This creates a large sales and price uncertainty, which leads to a higher risk of production.
The SELLFOOD Food Platform has been developed to address these issues.
Launching an organised electronic trading platform will allow concentrating the supply of national agricultural and food commodities by creating large and uniform batches. This solution, based on standardised products and predefined conditions of transaction, will minimise the trading risk.
The basic premise of the Food Platform is boosting the competitiveness of Polish entities from the agricultural and food sector, both in the domestic and the international markets.
Selling via the platform will be available for both small farmers running small family holdings and big producers offering large batches of wheat. The Food Platform will facilitate access to a raw material of the highest and predefined quality for all potential buyers – both small processors and large companies or exporters. We expect the Platform to be just an addition to conventional distribution channels at the beginning, but over time, it will become the main wheat trading space for numerous producers, processors, and exporters.
The project is being carried out by the National Support Centre for Agriculture in consortium with the Institute of Agricultural and Food Biotechnology and the Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics – National Research Institute. A partner and the main contractor and operator of the Food Platform is the consortium of Giełda Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie S.A. (Warsaw Stock Exchange) with Izba Rozliczeniowa Giełd Towarowych S.A. (Commodity Clearing House) and Towarowa Giełda Energii S.A. (Polish Power Exchange) under the supervision of the Financial Supervision Authority.
